At Skyland Equipment, every product we stock is selected to meet or exceed the relevant European (EN) and international (ISO) safety standards. For arborists and forestry professionals, understanding the certification behind your equipment isn't just reassuring — it's essential.
Below you'll find the key standards that govern our main product categories, and what they mean for you in the field.
Safety Helmets
EN 397 — Industrial Safety Helmets
Our climbing and industrial helmets are certified to EN 397, the European standard for industrial safety helmets. This standard covers protection against falling objects, penetration resistance, and chin strap retention. Many of our helmets also carry additional optional test marks for:
- Lateral deformation resistance
- Molten metal splash protection
- Electrical insulation (up to 440 V AC)
- Low temperature performance (down to −20 °C)
EN 12492 — Helmets for Mountaineering and Climbing Activities
Where helmets are also rated for rope access and arborist climbing, they additionally meet EN 12492, which tests lateral and frontal impact protection relevant to dynamic climbing environments.
Chainsaw Protective Equipment
EN 381 — Protective Clothing for Users of Hand-Held Chain Saws
EN 381 is the governing standard for chainsaw PPE and comprises several parts covering different garments and accessories:
- EN 381-5 — Leg protectors (chainsaw trousers and chaps). Class 1 (20 m/s), Class 2 (24 m/s), Class 3 (28 m/s).
- EN 381-7 — Gloves for protection against cuts by hand-held chain saws.
- EN 381-9 — Gaiters protecting against cuts by hand-held chain saws.
Each product page clearly states the class and part number it is certified to. Always match the protection class to your chainsaw's chain speed.
Harnesses & Fall Protection
EN 358 — Work Positioning and Restraint Systems
Work-positioning harnesses and lanyards in our range are certified to EN 358, covering belts and lanyards used to support the wearer in a work position or to prevent reaching a fall zone.
EN 361 — Full Body Harnesses
Our fall-arrest harnesses meet EN 361, the standard for full-body harnesses that distribute arrest forces across the thighs, pelvis, chest, and shoulders. These must be used in conjunction with EN 362 connectors and a compatible energy absorber or fall arrest device.
EN 813 — Sit Harnesses for Rope Access and Rescue
Sit harnesses designed for tree climbing and rope access are certified to EN 813, which specifies requirements for harnesses used in suspension, descent, and ascent during work at height.
Carabiners & Connectors
EN 362 — Connectors
All carabiners and connectors stocked by Skyland Equipment meet EN 362, which defines minimum gate opening widths, breaking loads (major axis, minor axis, and open gate), and locking mechanisms. Look for the rated load (kN) clearly marked on every connector.
EN 12275 — Connectors for Mountaineering Equipment
Carabiners used in tree climbing and arborist rope systems may additionally carry EN 12275 certification, classifying them by shape and intended use (B = Basic, H = HMS/Pear, X = Oval, etc.).
